A Randomized Trial to Assess the Impact of Early Steroid Withdrawal on Growth in Pediatric Renal Transplantation: The TWIST Study

.   .

Steroid withdrawal is attractive in pediatric transplantation due the adverse effect of steroids on linear growth. In this multi-centre randomized controlled trial, early steroid withdrawal in a daclizumab, tacrolimus and MMF regimen resulted in better growth than tacrolimus, MMF and conventional steroids. The rate of acute rejection was similar, although there were more infections in the steroid withdrawal group. This was only a six-month study, and further follow-up will be needed to confirm that these benefits in growth are durable.
