Association of hydroxyethyl starch administration with mortality and acute kidney injury in critically ill patients requiring volume resuscitation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Recently, 7 trials investigating the role of hydroxyethyl starch in the critically ill were retracted because of scientific misconduct.

This meta-analysis, which excludes these studies, indicates an increased risk of death and acute kidney injury in critically ill patients requiring acute volume resuscitation.
