Association of Pretransplant Serum Phosphorus with Posttransplant Outcomes

Both hypo- and hyperphosphatemia are associated with an increased risk of death in dialysis patients. In this large registry study, severe hyperphosphatemia was associated with increased risk of death. More moderate hyperphosphatemia was associated with graft failure after kidney transplantation. This shows the importance of phosphate management in patients pre-transplant, as it will affect post-transplant outcomes.
