This population-based retrospective cohort study linked medical data from military service fitness examinations to the Israeli ESRD registry to determine if there is a link between BMI and development of ESRD. Over 1 million adolescents age 17 years underwent a fitness examinations from 1967-1997. This was linked to incident treated cases of ESRD from 1980 to 2010. In a multivariate adjusted model, being overweight and obese in adolescence was associated with a significant risk for all-cause treated ESRD.
