Hospitalization Rates for Patients on Assisted Peritoneal Dialysis Compared with In-Center Hemodialysis

.   .

This multicenter, retrospective cohort study by linked a quality assurance dataset to administrative health data in Ontario, Canada. The study included 872 patients in the in-center hemodialysis group and 203 patients in the assisted peritoneal dialysis group. Using an intention to treat approach, patients on assisted peritoneal dialysis had a similar hospitalization rate of 11.1 d/yr (95% confidence interval, 9.4 to 13.0) compared with 12.9 d/yr (95% confidence interval, 10.3 to 16.1) in the hemodialysis group (P=0.19). […]

Peritoneal Equilibration Test and Patient Outcomes.

.   .

This US study of over 10 000 peritoneal dialysis patients looked at the association of peritoneal equilibration test parameters with all-cause mortality, technique failure and hospitalization rate. The median follow-up period was 15.8 months and 87% with on CCPD.  The results show a linear association between dialysate/plasma creatinine and mortality (adjusted hazards ratio per 0.1 […]

Effect of Neutral-pH, Low–Glucose Degradation Product Peritoneal Dialysis Solutions on Residual Renal Function, Urine Volume, and Ultrafiltration: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

.   .

This meta-analysis of eleven trials of 643 patients used a random effects model to evaluate the effect of peritoneal dialysate with neutral-pH, low-glucose degradation products on residual renalfunction, urine volume, peritoneal ultrafiltration, and peritoneal small-solute transport (dialysate to plasma creatinine ratio).  The results show a positive effect on preservation of residual renal function and greater urine volumes only.  However, the authors rightly conclude more studies are needed […]

An Incident Cohort Study Comparing Survival on Home Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis (Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplantation Registry)

.   .

This Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplantation Registry database study compared patient and technique survival between patients on home hemodialysis with those on peritoneal dialysis.  Overall, on every level that was assessed home hemodialysis was associated with better outcomes than peritoneal dialysis, including 5 year survival (85% vs 44%, respectively; log-rank P<0.001).  Patients eligible for both modalities may benefit from this […]

Peritoneal dialysis catheter implantation by nephrologists is associated with higher rates of peritoneal dialysis utilization: a population-based study

.   .

This population-based retrospective cohort study using administrative data looked at 3886 PD catheter insertions between 2002-2010.  The findings suggest that insertions by nephrologists resulted in lower overall PD nonuse rates.  The authors suggest that this greater use may be related to timing/technique of insertion or the greater desire on the part of a nephrologist for […]

The Impact of Timing of Dialysis Initiation on Mortality in Patients with Peritoneal Dialysis

.   .

A Korean cohort of 495 incident PD patients were analyzed with respect to the impact of timing of dialysis initiation on mortality.  The authors found that an eGFR < 5 mL/min/1.73m(2) at the initiation of PD was a significant risk factor for death, while an eGFR >10 mL/min/1.73m(2) at the initiation of PD was not […]

Peritoneal Dialysis Access Guide

This guide to peritoneal dialysis access is based in part on ISPD guidelines. It provides a concise review of catheter insertion and post-procedure care, non-infectious complications of PD catheters, infectious complications of PD catheters and antibiotic dosing guidelines.

Comparing Mortality of Peritoneal and Hemodialysis Patients in the First 2 Years of Dialysis Therapy: A Marginal Structural Model Analysis

.   .

This impressive study using marginal structural models analyses and DaVita data shows that PD is associated with 48% lower mortality in the first 2 years of dialysis therapy. This was independent of modality switching or transplantation rates.

Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are associated with similar outcomes for end-stage renal disease treatment in Canada

.   .

This study using Canadian Organ Replacement Registry (CORR) data compared PD survival relative to HD. Overall survival for the study period favored PD in the first 18 months and HD after 36 months. Looking at the 2001-04 cohort, survival favored PD for the first 2 years only and then was similar for both HD and […]
