Does perioperative hemodynamic optimization protect renal function in surgical patients? A meta-analytic study.

This meta-analysis sought to address the question of whether perioperative hemodynamic optimization could reduce postoperative renal dysfunction.  The results suggest a decreased risk of renal impairment and post-operative mortality.

    While the data regarding mortality reduction is interesting, it should be noted that the authors themselves indicate that

    “The presence of significant heterogeneity and inconsistency reduces the strength of evidence and, therefore, no definitive conclusion about the effects of perioperative optimization on mortality can be drawn.”
