In the ACCORD BP study, patients with type 2 diabetes at high risk for cardiovascular events were randomized to a target systolic blood pressure of <120 mmHg vs <140 mmHg. After 4.7 years, there was no significant difference in cardiovascular events or mortality but there was an increase in serious adverse events related to anti-hypertensive use.
