Influenza vaccine effectiveness in patients on hemodialysis: an analysis of a natural experiment.

.   .

Using USRDS data, this study assessed the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine by comparing years where the vaccine was correctly matched to the circulating virus with years where vaccine and virus were mismatched. Relative to a mismatched year, there was little evidence of increased vaccine effectiveness in well-matched years. The authors suggest that the current influenza vaccine strategy may have a small effect on morbidity and mortality in the end-stage renal disease population. Of note, vaccination rates were less than 50% in the study population.
