Outcome of treated and untreated asymptomatic bacteriuria in renal transplant recipients

.   .

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common complication post-renal transplant. Asymptomatic bactiuria is a common finding, but whether antibiotic treatment it will reduce symptomatic urinary tract infections is unclear. In this single-centre cohort study, there was no difference in the rate of progression of asymptomatic bactiuria to symptomatic UTI between treated and untreated episodes. This suggests that most cases of asymptomatic bactiuria should be managed conservatively.
